“This is one of the most exciting times for innovation and opportunity.”
For the past three years, our Dual-Site Centre Manager, Zoe Galea, has held her finger on the pulse of Broxbourne as she created supportive environments for local SMEs. She’s networked with local leaders and the new businesses moving into the area, and has seen the highs and the challenges for our businesses firsthand. In this article, Zoe shares four focus points that when actioned, will make a tangible difference to any business and look out for the announcement of a very special April event all about AI, tech and women in business.
The SME market is going through one of its most transformative periods in modern history. Rising costs, shifting customer expectations, hybrid work, and rapid advances in technology – especially AI – are all reshaping how small businesses operate. And yet, this is also one of the most exciting times for innovation and opportunity.
At BEC, we see every single day that with the right support, resilience can turn into growth, and uncertainty can become momentum.
The SME Market: Now and Looking Ahead
Today’s SME landscape is defined by both caution and creativity. Businesses are stabilising post-disruption, but they’re also adapting to a world where technology is no longer optional. The future of the SME market belongs to businesses that are agile, customer-centric, and ready to embrace digital tools that help them work smarter, not harder.
Tomorrow’s growth will come from:
- Tech-enabled efficiencies
- Better data and customer insight
- Community-driven collaboration
- Sustainable, ethical practices
- Flexible hybrid workspaces
SMEs that invest early – even in small, manageable steps – will be best placed to thrive in the years ahead.
Zoe’s insight – What SMEs Should Be Focusing on Right Now
✅ 1. Start (or continue) your digital journey
You don’t need to become a tech expert to benefit from digital tools. Small changes – automated bookings, email marketing, CRMs, AI-assisted admin – can dramatically improve productivity.
✅ 2. Strengthen your financial foundations
Cashflow forecasting, diversified revenue, and clear financial planning are essential in today’s climate.
✅ 3. Build connections
Community really is power. Collaborating, networking, and learning from others can open doors that solo working rarely does.
✅ 4. Invest in leadership and people
Future-proofing your team, culture, and skillset is just as important as future-proofing your product.

My Journey and background
I’ve spent over 30 years working in The City and globally, building experience across operations, leadership, transformation, and customer-focused environments in finance and banking. That background has shaped the way I support SMEs today – with a balance of strategic thinking, commercial awareness, and a deep understanding of what businesses need to grow sustainably.
Joining BEC allowed me to bring all of those skills into a space where they make a real difference for entrepreneurs, start-ups, and local businesses. Over the years, I’ve watched BEC evolve into a more dynamic, tech-forward organisation, and it’s a privilege to contribute to that transformation.
I’ve also lived in Broxbourne for over 20 years, so supporting local businesses isn’t just professional – it’s personal. I’m deeply invested in the success of our community and the people building its economic future.
I’m passionate about:
- Female empowerment and entrepreneurship – something I champion strongly as a woman who has navigated corporate and business environments for three decades.
- Being a role model to my four daughters, showing them that women can lead, innovate, and inspire.
- Building inclusive, supportive business environments where everyone feels they can grow.
- Creating spaces that blend community, innovation, and opportunity.
Outside of work, I relax through simple joys with my family – time outdoors, exploring new cafés and food spots, reading, or taking a quiet moment with a great coffee.
