Staying fit and healthy can seem like a challenge when you work a desk job that requires you to remain stationary for long periods – but it is possible to find the right balance. Here are seven ideas to help you incorporate fitness into your daily routine.
- Take walking breaks
Use regular breaks to take short walks around the office or outside. Walking helps to reduce the negative effects of sitting still for long periods and boosts energy levels. Even short walks can make a difference – it all adds up. And besides, any exercise is better than none. Track your steps before and after you start walking more around and near the office, and you may be surprised how much more distance you’re covering. At Theobalds Enterprise Centre, you’ll be just over the road from Cedars Park and it’s not far to walk to the middle of either Cheshunt or Waltham Cross. There are also showers at Theobalds if you want to go out for a run. At Hoddesdon Enterprise Centre, it’s about a 20-minute stroll into the town centre.
2. Desk exercises
Try performing simple exercises while at your desk, such as leg lifts, desk push-ups, seated leg extensions, desk yoga or lifting weights or even just heavy objects to hand. These exercises can strengthen your muscles and improve your circulation.
3. Get the number of snacks right
Because you’re spending a lot of time sitting at your desk, you don’t burn quite as many calories as if you were moving around a lot – which means you need to be a bit more mindful of your calorific intake. This doesn’t mean no snacks at all! Just remember to strike the right balance.
4. Take the stairs, not the lift
Opt for the stairs rather than the lift, whenever possible – this is a great way to get your heart rate up and work your leg muscles.
5. Standing or convertible desk
Consider using a standing or convertible desk that allows you to alternate between sitting and standing throughout the day. Standing burns more calories than sitting and can also help improve your posture.
6. Cycle or walk to work
If feasible, cycle or walk to work rather than driving or taking public transport. This adds physical activity to your routine, can be an energising start to your day, and boosts your metabolism. It’s also better for the environment. There are secure places to leave your bike at both Hoddesdon and Theobalds.
7. Consistency, consistency, consistency!
Remember, this is the key. Making the most of every little pocket of time to move around can make a huge difference to your overall fitness when it’s all put together. And be sure to stick with it. Changing your habits for a few days won’t really do anything – it will only be in the weeks and months that you start to see real differences.
