Christmas is a time for goodwill, generosity, and community, which makes it the perfect moment to reflect on how your business can give back. But true impact goes beyond December—it’s about creating partnerships and actions that last long after the decorations come down.
This is one of the reasons we are hosting The Business Case for Working with Local Charities workshop with Simone Kelsey Clark from the local charity CHEXS who are based at our Theobalds Centre.
Our Innovation Director, Julie Creffield recently attended the charities AGM and was blown away by the impact the company has had in the last 12 months, but also in the innovative, proactive and professional way the charity is run.
CHEXS have a long track record of supporting children, young people and their families in Broxbourne, and are an amazing presence in our centre since they moved in just over a year ago.
Their work is very much about partnerships and collaboration and building relationships, and so we have been delighted to see some amazing partnerships and collaborations between companies across our 2 sites and CHEXS in the last few months, and we have some exciting plans in the pipeline for 2025 for further projects…so WATCH THIS SPACE.
But back to Christmas…which is fast approaching
The Holiday Spirit of Giving: A Perfect Starting Point
Christmas is often a time when charities are overwhelmed with demand. Food banks face increased needs, shelters brace for colder weather, and many vulnerable people rely on community support to make it through the holidays. SMEs have a unique opportunity to step in and make a tangible difference during this critical time.
For example, a local bakery could donate unsold bread to a homeless shelter, while a tech company might organize a charity drive to collect laptops for children in need. These acts of kindness bring immediate relief and align your business with the festive values of care and compassion.
But the true magic lies in turning this seasonal effort into something more enduring.
Thinking Beyond December
While Christmas often inspires generosity, the challenges local charities face don’t vanish in January. By building long-term partnerships, your SME can help address these ongoing needs while reaping significant business benefits. Engaging consistently with a charity—whether through resources, expertise, or manpower—helps foster a deeper relationship, amplifying the impact over time.
How SMEs Can Make an Impact (Without Breaking the Bank)
Christmas often sparks the question, “How can we give back?” The answer doesn’t have to involve huge budgets or significant time commitments. Instead, think creatively about the assets your business already has:
- Manpower: Could your team spend a few hours volunteering at a local charity’s holiday event? This could be packing food hampers, distributing gifts, or setting up a festive fundraiser.
- Products or Expertise: If your business offers goods or services, consider donating them. Accountants could assist a charity with end-of-year finances, while retailers might contribute unsold stock to those in need.
- Space and Resources: Do you have a space charities could use? An unused meeting room could host a holiday workshop, or a delivery van might help transport donations.
- Networks and Influence: Your social media platforms can amplify a charity’s message. Share their holiday campaigns with your audience or encourage your customers to get involved alongside you.
The key is to focus on what you already have in abundance—be it skills, goods, or connections—and channel these into meaningful contributions.
Why Giving Back Is Good Business
Beyond the immediate goodwill generated at Christmas, charity partnerships bring long-term benefits to your business. Customers increasingly prefer brands that show a commitment to social impact, and employees are more engaged when they feel their work contributes to a greater purpose.
